Forming part of the Home Counties, Hertfordshire is a ?commuter county? for the city of London and lies just to the north of the capital. It has borders with the counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The county is noted in the Domesday Book. The New River starts in Hertfordshire and runs into London. It is actually an artificial river created to bring water from the springs of Hertfordshire into the capital in the 17th Century.
